What to do in the first hour after a leak
Work through these in order. Steps one to three stop the damage getting worse; the rest protect your claim.
- Stop the water. Close the main shut-off. If you can't find it, Tucson Water and most other providers can shut it at the meter; call their emergency line.
- Make it safe. Turn off breakers for wet rooms. Don't walk through standing water near outlets or appliances.
- Get water off what matters. Lift furniture onto blocks or foil, take rugs, electronics and papers to a dry room.
- Document. Photos and video of the source, every wet room, and damaged belongings, before anything is thrown out.
- Call your insurer. Open a claim and write down the claim number and adjuster's name.
- Call a water damage company. Call (855) 758-0714 connects you to one that serves your ZIP. Ask about arrival time and whether they bill insurance directly.
- Keep records. Save receipts for anything you buy and the crew's daily moisture readings.
